One of the best things that happened in 2016 was my older sisters wedding. It was the topic of discussion for about 9 months ...or more.. the wedding was kind of like a pregnancy LOL, everyone was SUPER excited!
I'll start by saying that my sister is one of my favorite human beings, of course it wasn't always that way ... I couldn't stand her when we were growing up lol we fought and bullied each other for the dumbest things (we shared a phone in our teenage years... and we had limited minutes/text messages, that should say it all). But as we grew older I realized that theirs absolutely no one better than your bigger sister, she's like best friend I didn't need to search for.
Needless to say that I was ecstatic when she got engaged to the love of her life, Jonathan. Growing up i didn't really like her choice of boyfriends but when Jona came along it was years into the relationship when i realized... yep he's the one for her, he didn't make her cry nor did he get on my nerves!
All jokes aside anyone who knows them knows that they are perfection and we were all beyond excited to be part of their journey!
Atlanta. Their wedding dress selection was beyond beautiful (we were not allowed to take pictures at that place) but the dresses were still too plain and their wasn't that big WOW that we were searching for.
Being the "awesome" maid of honor/sister that I am I knew one of her wedding dreams was to buy her dress in Guadalajara so I made sure to get that set up. One Friday in March the bride to be, my mom, and myself went on a 48 hour weekend trip to find the dress of her dreams.
We left on a friday evening and arrived late night to our beautiful country, my sister hadn't visited in so long so it was great that she was finally able to go back and see our family members in mexico and they'd get to help out in the mission of finding the dress. Saturday morning we got up bright and early and headed to the busy streets of Guadalajara. We were on two missions... help Mayra find her wedding dress and then I get could get my tacos haha(I LOVE TACOS!!)
My cousin took us to this plaza area that exclusively sells wedding/quinceñera/formal dresses for all types of events and their was about 10,000 stores LOL (sarcasm). I had never seen so many wedding dresses and so many different boutiques all at once. The interesting thing about this never ending street is how people get their customers. They literally have people working outside who walk up to you and say "hey are you looking for a dress?, follow me to this store they have the best designs here at such great prices etc" or some of them would hand you brochures from the stores and wouldn't really take a no for an answer (they'd walk and talk to you and take you to the store themselves). They were all earning that paycheck!! The first store we walked into she tried on a mermaid style dress .... I thought it was hideous, I immediately was like "hell NO" haha ... I seriously think I was pickier (maidzilla maybe?) than her (but sister knows best). The sales lady tried so hard to get her to say 'yes to the dress but we slowly walked away with a "we'll be back." -NEVER!
The following stores had better designs but again nothing out of the ordinary ,,, the hours were passing by and still no dress and most importantly still no tacos. We walked into this very nice boutique and she tried on various dresses. The last dress she tried on had everyone saying YES, YES,YESSSS she looked radiant and it was so gorgeous, the only one who wasn't YESSSing this time was my mother she was still a bit on the "ehh" side. She convinced my sister to keep looking a little bit more.. after all we still had some hours left in the day (she obviously wasn't hungry for tacos -_-) Had the sales consultant been as eager to sell the dress as the woman from the first store we would of totally bought it then and there ... but we walked away (I was a little sad to let it go, not going to lie haha). We went to 100 more stores after that one and none of the dresses were up the standards of the one we had all loved UNTIL a random guy came up to us and insisted that we go to his store. We agreed and followed the guy... he took us into some boutique that was on the inside of some building that had a sketchy elevator (again here I go putting myself in a dangerous looking situation .. it happens everywhere I go). The place turned out to have a lot of very pretty dresses so we picked a few of our favorites and she graciously tried them on again. None of the ones she tried on satisfied our eyes... then the sales lady was like "i have the perfect dress for you" she was pointing to a dress that looked nothing like the ones she was previously trying on... Mayra automatically was like ... "ehh noooo thats not really what i'm looking for" but somehow or another the lady got her to try it on .. she tied the shit out of that dress (it was a corset type) and then BAMMMM it was PERFECT!! I remembering thinking WOAHH my sisters really getting married, She finally said YES TO THE DRESS and I think my mom and auntie both cried .. it was such an unforgettable moment. Thanks to the insistent sales lady who knew exactly what she was doing she found my sisters perfect dress and it was the complete opposite of what she was looking for. We were all too happy and I was FINALLY going to get my tacos!
The interesting about the dress was that they actually have the factory right inside the store so they took her measurements and they made her dress literally in like 4 hours. The next morning we were on our way back home with a happy bride to be and her dream dress! It was honestly the best money I've ever spent!
Shopping for bridesmaid dresses was equally fun (no out of the country shenanigans though). We made about 3 different appointments and in the end like the typical girls we are .... we went back to one of the first dresses we tried on during the very first appointment haha (we wanted to explore every option possible!) It was so much fun playing dress up with everyone and we'd score our opinions on the dresses. For the most part we all agreed on almost everything so that was awesome. One of my personal favorites was the one i'm wearing below pictured with Nancy (she's wearing the hot pink dress) those dresses HAD POCKETS!!! who doesn't love a dress with pockets?!! but I think only two of us liked it so it was a no :(
You'd think that between girls and guys the girls would be the complicated ones in deciding what to wear but not in this case. The guys were the worst at deciding what to wear. They literally got their suits a month or two before the wedding (mrs bride was not too thrilled about that). But thankfully they finally agreed on the color which was gray for the groomsman and black for the groom. (Me and Mayra picked the winning suits, cause' girls always know best).
the following Saturday... so it only made sense. That day she had plans with one of the bridesmaids Amira to go get facials, her trail wedding hair, and having lunch. It gave me the perfect amount of time to get the house set up for the big night. I decorated the game room and it turned out cuter than I expected, even though I almost fell on my ass a couple times haha (no joke).
The girls started arriving around 4pm to rescue me and everyone was looking so cute!! We opted to all wear white that night so everyone was identified as bridesmaids. We only invited her closest girl friends so it wasn't a huge event. Literally everyone who showed up was important some way or another in the brides life.
It was scheduled to start at 7pm sharp, thankfully all the guest arrived on time... however, the bride was missing !! She ended up going to the mall straight after lunch. As hard as Amira tried she couldn't get her to hurry, poor Amira we kept texting her to hurry up LOL. When she FINALLY arrived we had her cover her eyes so she wouldn't see anyone just yet.. I lied to her and told her we were going out somewhere. Mind you... i thought she would have her makeup and hair done really cute but when she arrived she had on zero makeup and her hair was uh.... everywhere! I made her change super quick and she was insistent that we at least let her put on her eyebrows lol... boy was she in for a surprise.
I won't spill much on this particular part but mannnnn after countless shots of tequila and pretty much every bottle in the bar was empty EVERYONE was wasted. Their was not one sober soul in the room. (Quick Fact: Jona is always the bartender at our parties so with no guys in the house none of us girls knew how to make mix drinks sooo we "settled" for shots only). We cut her cake to "I want it that way" -a Backstreet Boy song and it became a sing along with hella oldies "Oops I did it again" by Brittney even made an appearance lol.
We had arranged to play games buttt by the way everyone was set it up it was merely impossible. One of the special things I remember from that night is passing around the Penis and each one of us stated our favorite memory with Mayra ... tears involved. Like I said everyone was someone close to her so it was all emotional... especially after countless tequila shots.
Some people weren't allowed to go home until after their nap lol so we had a full house. That night was crazy, emotional, and fun everything that we planned. Of course we ended the night with some Japanese karaoke haha ... literally we were singing Let it go in Japanese (shit was hard).
In the end the boys crashed our party after coming from their own night out with Jona... it was obvious from their faces that #TEAMBRIDE won the night!
It wasn't until the next day that #TEAMJONA won because they didn't have a messy house to clean up like i did... haha it was a MESS but totally worth it.
two love bugs Saggs and Angeles. They showed up the wedding week and I was super excited to have them in town! The night before the wedding was one for the books. We had an "onion party" LOL literally my mom had us cutting about 1,000 onions at her house ... it was NOT a pretty scene! I had never cried so much in one night (literally). It was such a sweet welcoming to our sweet cousins.
We finally finished with the onion hell. We made it back home hella late and we had to be up by 6am to go back to my parents house because thats where everyone was meeting for makeup and hair. When we arrived to the house it reeked of onions and the tears from the previous night were slowly coming back (FYI never cut onions prior to a wedding in the house hosting the makeup party lol) The smell eventually went away.. or we grew immune to it. While everyone was getting ready I was busy "perfecting" my Maid of Honor Speech, I'd literally read it to everyone who walked into my little sisters room. In my head I was like "yeaaaaaah i GOT THIS"!
We ended up having to rush to church like the typical girls but it was so worth it she was looking STUNNING, with her flawless makeup (by Erandi) and her hair was just like she pictured. I was looking pretty fine too if you ask me but of course no one compared to the bride ;)
The church ceremony was beautiful and so emotional. I teared up a couple of times and I think everyone else did too. My mom even sang her a song and it was such a great moment filled with so much love. One of the funny but not so funny church moments was watching the groomsman. Only two out of the seven knew how to follow church rituals. None of them really attend mass and it was obvious because they all looked bored and clueless (boys, don't know how to appreciate a lovely moment).
Once the mass was over we proceeded to take a million pictures .. so many pictures... so much flash... so much SMILING but most importantly so much LOVE! After the church pictures we all got on the limo and proceeded to a park in midtown to take even MORE pictures. But before that like the alcoholics that we are we stopped at a liquor store for a bottle of champagne and chips (chips cause we were hungry haha) and we all celebrated the beautiful union of Mayra and Jona. We made it to the location and it was a beautiful park! So many different poses and pictures later we were all ready to go. The chips weren't enough to fill anyone up and we were hot and starving so we finally headed over to the reception but not before graciously getting stuck in Atlanta traffic and a brief rainstorm lol (typical Georgia weather).
Upon our arrival to the reception the wedding court made the entrance followed by the newlyweds. It was our first time seeing the reception hall and it looked better than I envisioned while wedding planning I was in awe.
The typical hispanic party starts with of course the food so everyone was busy eating for the first portion of the evening. I remember running around a lot that day, greeting everyone that was coming in. For some reason I started asking guests if they needed anything and I found myself bartending and taking everyone beers to their tables haha... but I guess thats what I get for asking "do you need anything?" LOL.
One of the most perfect moments of the night was the couples first dance. It was beautiful to watch, it was as if they were in a love cloud. Their smiles were SO contagious its safe to say EVERYONE felt the loves these two have for each other just by looking at them. I have never seen such a happy married couple (and I'm not just saying this because she's my sister) but if you were there.. you know I'm not exaggerating!
Now let me talk about this Maid of Honor speech..................... I had my note cars, I rehearsed, I wasn't nervous.. UNTIL I was given the microphone. Boyyy did I have brain freeze, my notecards fell mid-speech so I lost my place, my jokes sounded awkward, my voice was shaky, it was a mess but it was from the bottom of my heart haha and it perfectly describe my personality as a person so I was not shocked it went down the way it did (my friend caught the whole speech on my phone and I still can't make myself watch it LOL). On the other hand .. Diego the Best Man he said he "didn't prepare" anything yet he rocked the shit out of that speech and killed it... HE EVEN CRIED.. i didn't even cry .. so kudos to him, he did that.
The remainder of the night consisted of again SO MANY PICTURES, countless visits to the bar, and non-stop dancing. I danced so much my feet were killing me by the end of the night. I remember taking my heels off at some point and dancing barefoot (I know gross) my feet literally looked like burnt tortillas (again GROSS) but it was totally worth it. If you know me you KNOW i love to dance. And before we knew it the night was over. It was one of those days that was just so perfect you replay it over and over in your mind just so you can briefly relive the precious moments again.
On another note I'd like to praise my lovely sister for being the most UNbridezilla EVER! You made wedding planning seem like a piece of cake (I know despite your crazy wedding day nightmares (literally) you and Jona handled everything so calmly! You guys are awesome.
Lastly i'd just like to say to my #HappilyEverGuigou's that you guys are the epitome of a nearly perfect love story. I know the story for you guys is just beginning but the love and commitment you guys have for one another is inspirational and contagious. As I've mentioned before you guys give me hope that the good kind of love is still out there. I can't wait to see what else you two can accomplish over the next years and just know that I love y'all!
I hope you guys enjoyed going through memory lane with me
