I believe in finding your "happy place". Whether it's the comfort of your own home, the arms of your significant other, or in my case a beach in Mexico.
Playa del Carmen has a special place in my heart. It's a place where I don't physically have a home... but where I feel most at home. Make sense? (but really at this point in my life, where is home?! LOL).
So you guys can understand my obsession i'll explain. This year alone I have visited cancun/ playa del carmen 5 times.
In January me and a friend Estephany desperately needed a beach vacation so after weighing in beach options we ended up settling for Cancun. It was the best decision ever. We opted to not stay at an all inclusive so that we could enjoy eating out and drinking outside of what the hotel had to offer ... second best decision ever!
The first night we partied so much I don't know how we made it back to the hotel... (ok well maybe it was because of Estephany, she wasn't as wasted as me). It's so easy to get drunk at the clubs in mexico with the UNLIMITED drink options and the "nice" bartenders trying to get the nice girls drunk, it worked. This happened all the nights we were there... I never wanted to leave.
January is an off season so the prices for the tours were incredibly affordable. We went for the "4 tours in one" it included:
1. a visit to Tulum (it's an ancient Mayan city) the beaches in Tulum are crystal clear
2. a tour of Coba (also an ancient Mayan city with a huge pyramid that we were allowed to climb).
3. a trip to the Cenote (an underground sinkhole that houses natural fresh swimming water).
4. and last but not least a visit to Playa del Carmen
We did ALLL of this in our one day tour. It was definitely exhausting yet tons of fun. I enjoyed learning more about my countries history and loved exploring all of the beautiful surrounding places.
I was so sad to be leaving the following day.
Come February... a good friend of mine wanted to go on a beach vacation. And well ladies and gentleman i am never one to reject vacation offers so I made it happen. This particular friend insisted on staying in Playa del Carmen rather than Cancun so I agreed.. I was told i was going to love it and i was open to the idea of liking it.
Well, long story short I fell in love and I never wanted to stay in cancun ever again.
5th Ave quickly became my favorite street to walk on, besides the beach. It actually felt like i was in Mexico with all the authentic taco stands and fruit stands with chile and lemon... i didn't get that in cancun and that was my love/hate dilemma with it.
The Spanish man singing my favorite Alejandro Fernandez songs with his guitar and fascinating smile suddenly became my husband (he just doesn't know it) .. the Wah Wah beach bar near the boats and the live band became my 1pm beach spot, the "cheladas with dos equis" quickly became my go to drink order... "Fah" became my favorite restaurant where I enjoyed live music and great drinks with great company... the beach at night became the comfort my toes and heart was searching for... it was a combination of everything I needed all in one place.
I always enjoy going on at least one tour while I'm on vacation just to get more out of the trip. We chose to go to Xel-Ha because the tour lady told us we would have an amazing time. She did not lie. It was paradise!
It was a water park with a never ending lazy river.. a list of never ending restaurants.. and bars located everywhere! and to make it better it was ALL included ;D Their was so many activities included that I didn't think we'd get to do it all ... but I made it my mission and we accomplished everything. From bike riding to the start of the river, to cliff jumping, to falling off a rope (i have no balance), to zip lining, to snorkeling, to finding cenotes, to walking in the jungle... (I'm telling you this place had it all!!). and we still managed to take shots and eat like fatties, it was the perfect day!
Once again I was incredibly sad leaving and i really wanted to extend my vacation but unfortunately we had to go back to reality.
Come March......Brenda a friend of mine told me she was in desperate need of a getaway.. and I was kind of the "getaway queen" so she messed up telling me she needed to go somewhere. Somehow it quickly turned into a GIRLS TRIP and once again I was headed to Playa del Carmen. To my defense I did give them other options for other beaches...
I ended up joining them a day later because I had a job interview the day I ended up getting the job offer that same day and I was on my way to my happy place... Life was great!
Come April, my sister and one of my favorite girl friends Belinda wanted to go on a Vacay.. and by now you all should know they don't really have to beg me to make things happen LOL I was on my way to Playa once more. I could give you directions on how to get around very easily now if you ask me lol. It was a blast to be able to take two of my favorite people to my favorite place. They absolutely loved it and got so wasted at Wah Wah beach bar by 3PM it was hilarious. We also made a "despacito" music video we have failed to edit and post ... it's probably for the best. We also went on an "adrenaline adventure tour" that was incredibly crappy but we made the most of it and enjoyed it regardless.
I ended up taking a break from my Playa streak after this trip ... because I was completing training for work... but once that was over I REALLY needed to destress my life away so guess where I went ?!
PLAYA ...All i needed was a beach massage, a beach, mango with chili, and some cheladas and thats exactly what I got. I have never been one to travel solo but at that point i felt completely comfortable going alone. People ask me all the time if i feel safe going there because of all that is broadcasted on the news... and my answer is always the same, yes.
I honestly believe i will end up retiring and opening up my own business in Playa one day.... but until that day comes i will continue to go religiously because at the end of the day that is my happy place.
PS. Shoutout to the people who reach out to me for travel advice when it comes to Playa.. i absolutely lovee giving out tips!

Much love, A
